Mt. Lincoln is the 8th highest mountain (14,265 ft) in Colorado and is the county high point for Park County. As is typical - and
I am one of those in that category - it is usually climbed after Mt. Democrat and before Mt. Bross - getting all three 14ers in one day. An interesting note about Mt. Lincoln -
this mountain was named for President Lincoln to get back at the Democrats for naming the sister mountain Mount Democrat.
Mt Lincoln was where my daughter and I were climbing one summer a few years back. We were within a hundred feet of the summit when we heard a loud roar. We looked at each
other, puzzled and then noticed - coming up the valley in the skies below us an F14 fighter jet. I knew I could not react fast enough to get my camera out of the backpack so I
just told my daughter to wave. We could see the pilot in the cockpit below us and he tipped the wings of the jet to us and was gone. That was a moment in time
that neither one of us will ever forget. Totally unplanned but not unusual to have unique things take place while hiking 14ers.
