      oak tree house
Mesa Verde, Spanish for ‘Green Table’, was a flourishing community from AD 600 through AD 1300. These cliff dwellings actually represent the last 75 to 100 years of occupation.

This image was taken from the edge of a cliff and across the valley to the Oak Tree House. You can see the walls, used to provide a safe working area and a space for children to play. Notice the rooms above the main level. Oak Tree House contains 50 rooms and 6 kivas. Kivas were round, ceremonial rooms entered through a ladder in covering - usually made of wood. If not used for ceremonial purposes (praying, healing) the kiva served as a work place and a place for gatherings.
