On Saturday, October 2, 2010, I got up before sunrise to drive to Mt. Falcon - just into the foothills of the Rocky
Mountains with a view of Denver and the plains to the east. I wanted to try to capture the sunrise. I got there plenty early and just sat in my jeep looking up at the moon
and stars in the cloudless sky. A wonderfully peaceful time but it didn't bode well for good photography.
I had to put my headlamp on to navigate the path to the overlook. That is a bit scary at times when done alone. I set up where I thought I might get some decent shots but
as I watched the deer grazing in the meadow below me, I realized I needed higher ground. I grabbed my tripod and climbed to the top of Mt. Falcom to see if this was better. It
was but there only a thin line of clouds on the horizon and not much chance to grab a sunrise picture.
The sun had just poked over the edge of the clouds and I was starting to pack my equipment when I realized this dead tree I had been trying to avoid might just be an
interesting addition to an image. I love the effect of its branches reaching towards the sun, even though the life is long gone from its limbs. It felt like the tree was
greeting the morning sun.
