Turn in the Trail

      turn in the trail
Pikes Peak is a Front Range of the Rockies 14er at 14,115 ft. Named for Zebulon Pike, an explorer who led an expedition to southern Colorado in 1806. It is home to an annual car race to the top as well as an annual marathon - up and down the mountain. That is not for me

I did this hike from Devil's Playground - a starting point you get to by driving up the Pikes Peak Highway to the Devil's Playground parking at 12,930 ft. Not much altitude to gain from here but it will test your breathing. The last several hundred feet of the climb are scrambling over rocks looking for the next cairn to mark your way. It is steep and can be icy at times - even in summer. As I came to the point in the picture, it looked as if the trail ended and I was going off the edge. I did see the cairn on the left so all was OK but the view from this location was phenomenal.
